Once more Ward and I have escaped from the flat countries. For us, mountain regions offer the ultimate pleasure in cycling. Over the last years we have beaten more than 50 passes in the Vosges, and French, Italian and Swiss Alps; many more are still on our list. This year we have chosen for Central Switzerland. Furka, Gotthand, Grimsel, Nufenen, Susten and other passes were on our wish-list (see map below). However, last months we have had only limited possibilities to boost up our physical condition. Therefore we have decided to make an intermediate stop in the German Black Forest.

Click Schwarzwald for details on our three trips in the Black Forest region east and south of Freiburg in Breisgau.

In Switzerland we stayed in the relatively simple, but convenient and affordable Hotel Rössli in Hospental (see photos below). The very friendly owners clearly appreciated active guests. It was no problem to store our bikes in the garage of the annex to the hotel and carbohydrate rich meals were offered at wish.

Interestingly, each of these six passes have their ascent in one Kanton (state) and the descent in the neighboring Kanton.
This allowed us to cycle in five different Kantons (see map and figure below).
